A DIVINE WELLNESS RETREAT

What Would Love Do?

Spiritual Retreat:

“This is my commandment, that you Love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this; that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you."John 15:12-15

I have always been fascinated by Love – the feeling and the concept. 1 John 4:8 tells us that unless we Love, we do not know God, because God is Love. I have learnt that Love is therefore not an emotion; it is a choice and a commitment. Loving (God) requires obedience. God has given us the command that if we claim to Love him, we must love our brother (1 John 4:21). Now what is Love? The definition of Love as we know it is that “is patient, it is kind….it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres”(1 Corinthians 13:4-7).

The last sentence in the definition of Love is what resonates with me the most: “it always protects, always trusts, always perseveres”. I have had my share of disappointments when it comes to people in my life, and I had no choice but to learn and commit to loving unconditionally. Unconditional Love is one of the most difficult commitments one will have to make in their life, because it means loving others the way God Loves us. God’s Love is not always comforting - he rewards us, but he also convicts us when we fail to do his will. The same applies with our relationship with people. When we love others, they are not always going to say or do the things that make us happy and sometimes they will hurt us (even intentionally); however we cannot base our Love on the emotions we feel toward that person; instead we must consciously draw from the spirit of God which resides within us, the knowing that He is the ultimate healer.

Forgiveness and Love go hand in hand. I have discovered that the best way to figure out if a relationship (romantic or friendship) is based on Love is by how you are both able to handle conflict. If you can always come to a place of forgiveness, then that’s Love. 1 Corinthians also describes Love as ‘keeping no record of wrongs’; therefore if our approach is to deal with situations in an indirect (passive aggressive) manner we are basically bottling up the emotion inside. Being direct is the first step toward forgiveness, and if you both are able to confront the situation, and then make the decision to forgive, by pulling from the spirit of God; then you are abiding in Love, for God is Love.

Be Well & God Bless,
